Built for delivering excellent performance in both studio recording and live sound applications, the Royer Labs R-12 Active Ribbon Microphone sports a figure-8 pickup pattern and active circuitry for high output with low noise. Ideal for acoustic or amplified string instruments, pianos, brass, drums, and more, this microphone delivers a warm, natural sound with nuance.

The R-12 sports the same well-regarded ribbon element of the legendary R-121, ensuring a high maximum SPL handling of 160 dB with the onboard -15 dB pad engaged. This provides enough headroom to handle the loudest of sound sources. The switchable 100 Hz high-pass filter helps to reduce low-end frequency build up that can occur due to the proximity effect, making it possible to engage in close-miking techniques. The internal ribbon element is shock mounted, helping to reduce handling noise, and the triple-layer metal mesh windscreen prevents annoying plosives from ruining a killer vocal take. The R-12 includes a mic stand adapter, a mic sock, and a carrying case.

Legendary Ribbon Element

The R-12 uses the same 2.5-micron ribbon element found in the company’s legendary R-121 microphone. This feature delivers Royer’s well-known high SPL (sound pressure level) capabilities measured at 160 dB (with the onboard pad engaged).

With its switchable -15 dB pad, the R-12 can deliver excellent headroom for louder program material such as drums and dimed electric guitars. This important feature eliminates any potential for headroom-related distortion on the loudest sound sources.

Active Circuitry for High Output with Low Noise

Another notable feature of the new R-12 microphone is its onboard active electronic circuitry, which significantly increases output level for quieter sound sources such as acoustic instruments and vocals. R-12’s active electronics consistently put a perfect load on the ribbon element, enabling the microphone to deliver its full sonic potential. The R-12 is also outfitted with a switchable high-pass filter precisely tuned to reduce low-end proximity buildup, making this microphone a perfect choice for capturing louder vocal performances and close-miking of instruments and loudspeaker cabinets.

Isolated Ribbon Transducer

Completing its rich feature set, the R-12 houses an internally shock-mounted ribbon transducer, which helps to protect the ribbon element while also reducing handling noise. Combined with its built-in triple-layer windscreen, the microphone's ribbon is effectively protected against plosives and other wind-related noise.
